Why Use Ground Stakes?
Feb 19th 2018

For gardeners wondering why deer and small rodents are getting into their gardens it's probably because they either 1) aren't using the right height deer fence or 2) are not staking down the fence with ground stakes.
The best deer exclusion fence will be 7.5' to 8' feet high; but having this height fence is not enough to rid deer and small critters. To stop digging animals, secure the bottom of the fence with fence stakes. The reason why deer, rabbits, squirrels and other garden nuisances are reaching flowerbeds is because they are sneaking in from the bottom. Use ground stakes every 5 feet apart to stop rodents from crawling into gardens.
There are two types of fence ground stakes: Kinked Ground Stakes and Rebar Ground Stakes. Kinked Ground Stakes can be used in most soil types. For rocky, hard soils, it's best to use Rebar ground stakes.
Typically, deer will walk the perimeter of the fence before digging. They will not attempt a jump, due to their poor vision, unless they are being chased by a predatory animal. Because deer try to dig before jumping, this is why ground stakes are necessary accessories for any deer fence system.
