As a homeowner, you take pride in your landscape; and we completely hear you when you say you don't want an ugly looking dog fence on your property. For this reason, we support your decision not to buy chain-link fence. Let's face it, they are ugly; they corrode; and they are a pain to install.

But, when DeerbustersCanada hears that dog owners are thinking about installing an underground electric dog fence in the yard, we cringe. Here's why you should say 'no' to wireless dog fences.

Okay, we admit it, invisible dog fences are just that, they are invisible. But, there are reasons why this type of fence is not a great choice for your dog. 

The shock factor.

We've heard it before "Our dog doesn't mind it, really." But, we can't wrap our heads around the fact that the fence is shocking the dog. The idea of an electric dog fence is that it will provide a gentle shock (there's an oxymoron) to the dog's collar that will teach the dog to not run outside of the perimeter of the yard. But, are we really teaching the dog not to run away; or are we teaching them not to move at all? 

The fear factor

Dogs enclosed by an in-ground dog fence don't know when to stop moving about the yard. They wander off the yard; and they get shocked. They do it again; and they get shocked. Then, they stop moving all together. Dogs become afraid to move. They don't know what they did wrong; they just know that if they take a few steps forward, they will possibly get hurt. Why put your pet through the fear?

The alternative

If you are like me and don't want to see your dog mentally and physically upset, choose a plastic or PVC-coated metal dog fence for the yard. These type of fences for dogs are more humane than wireless fences and are virtually invisible thanks to the black PVC-coating. They will last 10-30 years in the field and require less maintenance than a wireless dog fence. Now, doesn't that sound better?
