It's Adopt a Shelter Cat Month!

Jun 3rd 2020

It is estimated that there are approximately 7.9 million cats and 5.9 million dogs in Canada.

June is when animal shelters begin to see a rise in cat intake due to kitty breeding season in spring. In 2017, Canadian shelters took in 87,000 cats compared to 33,000 dogs. In 2016, 20,753 cats were euthanized in Canada - deemed unadoptable to clear out space for more cats. For families thinking about owning a pet, it's time to consider adopting a cat from a local animal shelter and saving a life.

Cats make wonderful pets for active individuals on-the-go and families with small kids, as cats are gentle with them. They are low-key for older folks, too but are playful and energetic around other companion pets. They really are the purr-fect pet!

Cats can play in the fenced-in backyard with their owners and learn a few tricks - just like dogs. They need an open area where they can go to run and exercise. Keeping cats lean is just as important as keeping dogs in shape. Without fitness, cats risk health complications as they age, including high blood pressure and obesity, as well as a shortened life span.

Now that summer is here, and it's Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, what do you say? Are you ready to bring home Kitty?
