Is 20 Gauge Stronger Than 14 Gauge?

Jun 26th 2020

Gauge is a unit of measurement that seems to stump people; and it's not their fault. Gauge is confusing at first thought; but with our help, you'll be a pro at learning the difference in no time.

Gauge sizes are numbers that indicate the thickness of a piece of sheet metal, with a higher number referring to a thinner sheet. It simply means that the higher the number the thinner the metal material will be with metal fence mesh; fence posts and other materials.

Example: 14 gauge welded wire is stronger than 20 gauge steel hex web. Take a look at both materials to see that the welded wire fence mesh is stronger than the steel hex fence; and it has nothing to do with the PVC-coating and everything to do with the steel core.

Learning about gauge will help with determining which type of metal deer fence to buy for lawns and gardens.
