Euthanizing Dogs In Canada

Oct 9th 2019

Animals, specifically pets, are considered private property in Canada; and the country does not have an animal welfare protection act set for killing, euthanizing, dogs. Pet owners can kill dogs if they are moving; do not have time to care for the animal; or do not want to deal with health and mental behavior issues.

Veterinarians in Canada are far less enthusiast to help euthanize healthy pet at requests to put them down. Legally, it is an owner's decision whether they want to go through with it or not.

"According to Canadian Federation of Humane Societies numbers for 2015:

• 1,890 animals classified as healthy were euthanized (759 cats, 39 dogs and 1,092 of other species)

• 4,042 (2,202 cats, 1,606 dogs and 234 others) were euthanized at the request of an owner

• A total of 20,977 animals were put down that year, including 10,912 classified as unhealthy or untreated" (CTV News)

Unless dogs are sick, owners usually drop dogs off at humane societies or animal shelters. Dog adoption gives companion animals a second chance at living and being in a forever home.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, a time when animal shelters lower pet adoption fees. During October, DeerbustersCanada will offer discounted rates on dog fence kits to anyone looking for humane yard fence for dogs.

Consider adopting a shelter dog from a local animal rescue for all the right reasons.
