Do I Have Lyme Disease? Know the Symptoms
Dec 27th 2016
As stated throughout the DeerbustersCanada blog, some deer ticks spread Lyme Disease; and if you found, and have successfully removed a deer tick from your skin within the first 48 hours, there is a chance you are in the clear. But, how do you know for sure? As always, it's best to visit a healthcare provider to determine the type of tick that was latched-on to your skin and to conduct a blood test for tick-borne illnesses.
Some tick-borne diseases are often misdiagnosed because the symptoms are similar to the common flu. Signs and symptoms can vary from person to person, and may not appear for days, weeks or even months after a tick bite. Here are common symptoms of Lyme:
- Fatigue
- Fever or Chills
- Headache
- Skin Rash - often a 'Bull's eye' around the tick bite area
- Nervous System disorders
- Arthritis
- Muscle and joint pains
- Heart palpitations
Untreated symptoms can lead to more serious complications including neurological problems, numbness and paralysis. Although not common, fatalities have been reported from Lyme Disease. Early-stage Lyme Disease can be effectively treated with 2-4 weeks of antibiotics.
To control deer ticks around the lawn and garden, it's best to use deer repellents, tick sprays and deer fencing. Move firewood away from homes and keep grass mowed. Trim tree branches and remove leaves from the lawn (this is where ticks like to hide for warmth in the wintertime). After outdoor activities, do a thorough tick check on yourself and your pets.
